Special emphasis aimed at spurring estate planning

National Estate Planning Awareness Week is October 15th - 21st

Estate planning is an often overlooked element of financial wellness. More than 120 million Americans do not have proper estate plans to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents, or untimely death. This costs many families wasted dollars and unnecessary hardship that can be minimized with proper planning.

National Estate Planning Awareness Week was adopted in 2008 to help the public understand what estate planning is and why it is such a vital component of financial wellness. Occurring the third full week in October each calendar year, National Estate Planning Awareness Week offers the perfect opportunity to reach Americans on a regular basis with a reminder of the need for estate planning.

According to a 2014 industry trends survey of estate planners conducted by WealthCounsel, one of the most common reasons clients engage in estate planning is to spare their family members and heirs the chaos and conflict that often occurs after their death. Another common reason that consumers engage in planning is to protect their children from mismanaging their inheritance, or to shield their children's inheritance from creditors.

The purpose of estate planning is to develop a strategy that will maintain the financial security of individuals through their lifetime and ensure the intended transfer of their property and assets at death, while taking into consideration the unique circumstances of the family and the potential costs of different methods. A properly-created team of professionals may include, but is not limited to, the attorney, accountant, trust officer, and credentialed insurance financial planners, all working together for the benefit of their client.

Although the national emphasis for estate planning awareness is the third week of October, stay tuned to our social media sites for updated blogs and online resources aimed at helping you ensure your planning is complete.
